Today we thought we'd mix it up and add something of our own to the list of things to do while in Brighton as this is definitely a place the ladies will want to check out... #51 (see what we did there) Get a Do at Betty Lou Beauty Salon!
Erin came across Betty's before we had even left Perth while googling places around Brighton that were retro/ vintage, so there was no doubt it would be on our list of things to do. As Erin and Tamara were in desperate need of a haircut it seemed fitting for today.
Liz, the owner of Betty Lou, has been running this business for two years now and they just celebrated their birthday earlier this month. She opened it on a budget of £100 and it has since grown from a one woman operation to a full running salon including hair, make-up, nails, waxing and a tattoo parlour downstairs. They even host hens days over the weekend since Brighton is a hardcore hens destination. Needless to say, Liz really filled the void of retro hairstyling that Brighton was lacking, and with such a vintage inspired community we're sure the locals were over the moon when she opened for business.
The salon is decked out with check flooring, beautiful art deco mirrors, original vintage hair setting aparatus, and a great selection of artwork all very in keeping with the retro look. On entering the salon we were both treated with warm smiling faces, a comfy chair, and gin. Yes, gin! Did we mention it was in a teacup? Well, it was and it was perfect. And no judgy mcjudges here thanks - it was past midday so that makes it alright, doesn't it? Both Erin and Tamara decided on a cut and a set, and with Erin heading off to Dublin on a fifteen hour bus trip, they did everything in their hairspraying power to make sure the set stayed.
Tamara had Liz as her stylist who knew exactly what she wanted when she said a middy cut with no layers... Tamara was impressed! The cut was perfect, just what she needed, and she'll definitely be back as she discovered they use the same hair colour that she has done in Perth - Liz could even name the colour just by looking! This girl was on fire! Next was the set which is something Tamara does on herself frequently, so it's always nice to see how other people do it. It was pretty much the same process, although Liz used a curling iron which doesn't always get the best results on Tamara's hair, however she was very happy with the set and brush out received - though it didn't last long due to the wind, and we've discovered our hair just doesn't stay done in the UK... maybe the water?
Erin had a brilliant head massage and cut, pretty much exactly following what she cuts herself. The set was very precise, using setting lotion, mousse and hairspray without brushing out to ensure it would stay overnight until she got to Dublin. It didn't, unfortunately.Perhaps overuse of product was the downfall?
Both girls have since done a wet set of their own and were super happy with the results of the brush out, good thing too as it was for our show in London!
So the end result? Betty Lou is highly recommended by our girls - especially for those of you don't normally do vintage hair. We saw one of their other customers depart with some wonderful victory rolls, and Tamara is tempted to return for a beehive - Liz's specialty. Our girls will stick to doing their own sets for now though, but may be back for further cuts, colours and gin. Can't forget the gin.
