Ok, so let's be honest - this entry is gonna be really short! We're knackered from doing our show AND then a feature at The Late Show, which was great fun, but we didn't get to bed til two, so we chose a simple one for the next task...
#9 on the list is Visit The Ruins of the Old Pier, fitting perfectly into our themed movie moments pictures, especially on such a cold foggy day!
(Day 2 of our 30 Days of Movie Moments - THE FOG! Or is it THE MIST? Take your pick!)
Our visit to the decaying ruins of the West Pier provided us with the opportunity to engage in a very British tradition, or at least what the BBC has repeatedly informed us is a very British tradition...solving our very own murder mystery!
Our victim? The burnt-out shell of the West Pier itself; built in the 1860s, closed in 1975 and destroyed by a series of mysterious fires in 2003. The perpertrator(s) of these destructive fires is still unknown, so we put on our amateur sleuthing caps, made some tea and went to work.
We gathered many clues from ten minutes of furious Googling and Wikipedia speed-reading. We discovered that there are already some pretty wild theories out there about the burning of the Pier - some believe it was an arson attack arranged by the owners of the nearby Palace Pier, to stop the restoration of the West Pier and therefore eliminate potential competition! Others suggest that the burning was arranged by the owners of the West Pier themselves, as restoration would prove too costly and they wanted the freedom to redevelop the site from scratch.
We have developed some interesting alternative theories, however.
TAMARA: The mermaids. The mermaids did it. So they could have a place to hang out. Either that or NASA.
ROBERT: The West Pier obviously needed to be burnt so that it could appear in the background of that one shot in MirrorMask. Either that or it was struck by lightning three times in a time travel experiment GONE WRONG.
TYLER: The seagulls. Those f**king seagulls. They're huge. One of them took nearly a whole hotdog out of my hand...I mean, I'd only taken one bite. So do I believe they are capable of burning down a historical landmark? YES.
ERIN: It was obviously the CIA, who paid the IRA through the DEA with the FIA providing the funds. The NSU had a LOL when the IAAI couldn't figure it out, I'm sure of it!
We think we're on the right track.
